This course is devoted to designing, turning, sanding, and finishing a lidded container. Additionally, surface decoration and design will be discussed and demonstrated. Craftsmanship is stressed. Emphasis is also placed on creating a pleasing and functional form, which illustrates command of woodturning techniques.

Turning a hollow form involves the process of removing wood from the inside of a vessel through a small hole. Urns and Southwestern-style pots are common examples of hollow forms. In this class, students will learn the skills necessary to safely hollow out a vessel using, for the most part, shop-made tools. Turning the outside of a hollow form involves spindle turning and face grain turning tools. Note: Students need to purchase either a Dennis Stewart or Sorby arm brace handle.
